Hear Our Voices – Mental Health in a Developing World
Persons living with mental health problems, and their families are often stigmatised by societies. Hear Our Voices is a feature_-length documentary (38 mins) set in Nepal, India, Ethiopia, Uganda and South Africa, told from a patient perspective. It takes the viewer on a journey of 5 families’ personal experiences of living with, or supporting a family member living with mental illness. The illnesses that the families are faced with include mental problems associated with substance abuse, depression, schizophrenia and intellectual disability. Along their journey, they come across traditional healers, health workers and members of the Programme for Improving Mental Healthcare, working to integrate mental health into the public health system.
